Fractions
Students have been learning about fractions in math. They know about unit fractions, numerators, and denominators. We started our fraction journey with manipulatives such as fraction strips and fraction circles.

Who Took Humphrey?
We started our day with a message from Humphrey. Someone kidnapped him and left a series of clues for us to find him.
See his Padlet post below.
We found many clues throughout our class. Each envelope, or clue, had a math word problem to solve. These word problems provided a cryptic message about where Humphrey was.
Once all the word problems were solved the students used a number/letter decoder to reveal a secret message.
The message said, "He is in room E215." This led us to Mrs. McSweeney's classroom. There we found Humphrey and Mrs. McSweeney shared her motives for kidnapping our class pet. The students were so excited during this activity and solved many multi-step word problems in the process. It was a success!!

Multiplication Fortune Tellers
We are just about done learning tricks, strategies, and tips for mastering our multiplication facts. Today the students created "fortune tellers" that focus on the trickiest facts such as 8x8 and 7x8. Please encourage your child to use the Reflex Math program three times a week. Fact automaticity is key for math success.

Multiplication Table with Arrays
Today the students worked as a team to fill in a multiplication table with arrays. This giant table is on the wall and is a great visual for our math facts. Please remember to have your child practice his/her facts using the Reflex Math program three times a week.

Data
Students had the chance to collect data for their bar graphs. First, they created a survey based on the data they wanted to gather. This morning we visited Mrs. Williamson's and Mrs. Horton's classrooms to survey their fifth grade students. This gave us plenty of data to create bar graphs on the computers using the "Create a Graph" program. The final projects came out great.

Prodigy Math
After working so hard on their math test today the students had some free time to play Prodigy. This web-based fantasy math game is aligned with the Common Core Math Standards. Students can connect with one another and "cast spells" by solving math problems. The program increases the difficulty level the more students play. My class absolutely LOVES it, and the best part is that they are practicing important math concepts as they play.
