Prodigy Math

After working so hard on their math test today the students had some free time to play Prodigy. This web-based fantasy math game is aligned with the Common Core Math Standards. Students can connect with one another and "cast spells" by solving math problems. The program increases the difficulty level the more students play. My class absolutely LOVES it, and the best part is that they are practicing important math concepts as they play.

The story we are listening to during read aloud is called Stone Fox. Stone Fox is a about a little boy and his grandfather who live on a farm and plants crops. The characters are Little Willy, Grandfather, Doc Smith, Stone Fox, Searchlight, and Clifford Snyder. The big problem is that Grandfather is sick because he owes taxes. Little Willy is going to try to solve the problem by winning $500 in a dog sled race. Will Little Willy beat Stone Fox in the race?

Student Post - Happy Spirit Day

Last Friday we had spirit day.  We could wear sports clothes to school,  but if you wore sports clothes you would have to bring in some money for Red Cross. The Red Cross will use the money for the hurricane victims. Our class raised about $55 and the whole school raised about $1500.

Introduction to Chrome Books

Mrs. Tucceri came in our class today to teach the students how to responsibly use the Chromebooks. Students learned how to log into the Chromebooks and how to put them away.  Each child read through and signed the Acceptable Use Policy. Now that we have covered the basics we can start using these tools to support our learning.

First Read Aloud ~ The World According to Humphrey

I think many students would tell you that their favorite time of the school day is enjoying our first read aloud The World According to Humphrey. They beg me to read it and sigh when a chapter comes to an end.

Humphrey is a classroom hamster who spends his days enjoying the students in Mrs. Brisbane's class. If only Mrs. Brisbane felt the same way about him. Humphrey manages to impact the lives of everyone who cares for him including Principal Morales, Aldo the school custodian, and several of the students in room 26.  This lovable little hamster is adored by so many, but will he win over Mrs. Brisbane who does not have such a soft spot for "rodents?"

Throughout the year, students in my class will also have an opportunity to bring Humphrey home for a visit. The directions for this writing activity are written on the inside of his cage. My third grade students are excited to spend time with this lovable book character and write of their adventures together.
